The Big Picture
In mid-May we kicked off the first Audubon Magazine Photography Awards. Now, six months, almost 2,500 entrants, and more than 16,000 photographs later, we have our winners. Still, even as we celebrate these images for their beauty and quality, we hope they will inspire others to go out and actually see the birds, and to support efforts to protect them so that future generations can see them, too.

Birds are beautiful, of course, and a hawk perched on a branch or a heron standing in a marsh can make a riveting image. But when a talented photographer combines patience with quick reflexes, he or she can capture some of the most amazing action shots.
