Five Questions From an Audubon Traveler

Tour companies vary widely in their impact on the natural world. Before you book a trip, find out its environmental bottom line. One good way is to send the following letter (or a personalized version of it) to the company in question.

Dear Tour Operator,

As a member of the National Audubon Society, I am very aware of the potential conflict between tourism and the natural environment. Hoping that my own travels will have a positive impact on conservation, I would like to get more information about your company before booking a tour. Please answer the following questions so that I may make a more informed travel decision.

1. How will your company's tour teach me about the local environment? What materials and education do you provide?

2. What are the accommodations, and how is waste disposed of?

3. Do you use local guides? What training do they receive?

4. How does your company contribute to local conservation efforts?

5. How does your business benefit the local people? Thank you for helping me ensure that my travels will help, not harm, the environment.

Sincerely yours,
